For more than forty years, Niven portrayed on screen the impeccable values of a lost breed of English gentlemen - handsome, beautifully spoken, elegantly dressed, witty, with perfect manners and utterly charming. Niv, according to his friends, was much the same off-screen. Both men and women were enchanted by his charisma, humour and joie-de-vivre. In addition to winning an Oscar for Separate Tables (1958), Niven was a polished writer, and published two volumes of lighthearted autobiography THE MOON'S A BALLOON (1972) and BRING ON THE EMPTY HORSES (1975). Yet behind those twinkling eyes, Niv's life was punctuated by tragedy and he was often deeply unhappy. From the death of his father when Niven was five, to his mother's neglect and the stepfather he loathed, through to the death of his beloved first wife and his volatile and disturbing marriage to his second wife, Hjordis, tragedy and hardship were never far away. Graham Lord, using new material from Niven's private papers, manuscripts, unpublished stories and correspondence, has written a fresh, revealing, funny and poignant portrait of a brave and brilliant man. Fully authorised by Niven's family and drawing from dozens of interviews with stars, from Lauren Bacall to Roger Moore and Sir John Mills, NIV the Authorised Biography of David Niven is a fitting tribute to one of Hollywood's greatest heroes.

Despite Mr. Lord's attempt to sway the reader otherwise, I remain a loyal fan of Mr. Niven. I gave this poorly written so-called autobiography a 3 star rating only for the old Hollywood lore included. The reading is choppy at best and terribly repetitive - like no one edited it, just wanted to get it off their desk. All references to fact dated to 2003 and yet it wasn't published until 2013 - more awkwardness. Overall Mr Lord spent most of this autob demeaning Mr Niven - I had the distinct feeling I was reading a gossip column. I finished this book depressed and utterly disappointed in Mr Niven, until realized it was Mr Lord who deserved this honor and not Niven. He deserved better from you Mr Lord!Product details

Niv The Authorised Biography of David Niven eBook Graham Lord Reviews
I have read the Moon's a balloon and Bring on the Empty Horses. The M's a B was excellent and side splitting funny, the B on the E H was less so, an odd collection of stories and interesting/funny but not as good as the first. This book is more factual, the author has done amazing research digging up facts and interviewing relatives and actors that worked with David. As a result he does highlight a tendency for David to over exaggerate (what story teller doesn't) and occasionally he appears greedy and not always nice. But nobody's perfect and he was a great actor and personality. This book covers his life in great detail.
This was an excellent if shocking book about one of my favorite actors. It seemed as if no one had an unkind word to say about the charming Mr. Niven. His public image was well cultivated and deserved.
His hound dog traits regarding women and his wives came as a surprise. Every woman who appealed to him ( and I suspect that was all of them who crossed his path) were fair game. He sanctified his first wife who died tragically, at the same time he was carrying on with multiple starlets. His second marriage, while long lived, was a disaster for him. This man who loved women, sex and the pleasures his fame could bring ended up with a vicious spiteful woman-how ironic.
It goes to show that these men who bed hundreds of women end up learning nothing about them.
This book was wonderful, heart breaking and a revelation of an movie star from a by-gone age. Mr. Niven life was one of fun and hard work. He never revealed his life-long obsession about money and that he could perhaps be destitute as he aged. He worked himself to a sad ending.
Mr. Niven semed to have a wonderful connection to his two adopted daughters, but although all of his four children loved him, it wasn't until he adopd his daughters at a more mature time in his life did he finally enjoy their chidhood.
Sad marriage to a wife who neither loved or respected him. He gave so may wonderful and delightful performances on screen.
I have read several biographies about David Niven, and this one is, by far, the best. It is very well researched, and very well written. He quotes often from friends and family of Mr. Niven. He is also very fair in his recounting of Mr. Niven's life. He includes the bad as well as the good. He even tries to be fair when speaking of Niven's second wife by finding the apparently few people who actually liked her. I get the impression Mr. Lord liked Mr. Niven very much, and it shows. In contrast, in the Morley biography, it seemed very obvious Mr. Morley despised Mr. Niven, and left me wondering why he even wrote the book which was nothing more than an extended rant at how bad an actor Niven was. Niven picked some awful pictures to appear in, but, as Mr. Lord puts it so well, it is worth watching the pictures just to watch Niven shine. Also, referring to a previous review, I didn't notice any spelling errors unless the writer is referring to the British spellings of words such as honour for honor.
Mixed feelings, definitely. Growing up, I watched Niven, in films and on television. Always delightful. When his books came out in the seventies, I read and enjoyed them.
This biography, is disappointing. Nice to learn more of Niven's history, to be sure, but could do with less crudity. I also find that the chapters go on and on, often because the author has been perhaps less selective in detail than might have been sufficient. Several times, I was at the pot of "enough, already!"
Unfortunately I didn't read the 'offer' close enough. This is not Nivens 'The Moons a Balloon'. After checking every which way on , I find the book David Niven wrote is not available on . Hope it is offered soon. Still have my paperback of his book, but looked forward to having it on my .
Read The Moons A Balloon in for the first time in 1970 - laughed so hard thought my ribs would crack.
Husband seldom reads books, but when I started reading excerpts he took it away from me, then read the entire book.
He was born [3 months and 22 years after Nivens birthdate] and he was raised in Ireland. He recognized so many incidents from Nivens childhood days in his own life. I purchased another book to read until he finished. Fortunately hadn't read too far into the book myself - so had the joy of starting it all over again. Reread often; especially if in need of good humor & funny incidents. I am a born and raised American, so trust me - the humor won't be lost on you either. Enjoy!!! Must be honest the stories in his later life though good, they weren't nearly as hilarious as his early years.
This is a very entertaining read for anyone with a love of old films. I've read so many biographies of stars Grace Kelly, Robert Wagner, and more. All of them included wonderful, hilarious stories about David Niven, clearly he was an important part of their lives and someone to be adored. So, even though I'm not a huge fan of his work, I sought out this book and was not disappointed. I would have loved to have a drink with this guy.
Graham Lord tells a well-researched story and makes sound conclusions about Niven's life and relationships. If I have any complaint at all. It's that I found Lord's writing style a little labored at first. It's very factual, not a lot of affection or warmth infused, and his turn of phrase had me rereading sentences to make sure I understood the meaning. Still, I got used to his style and sailed through the book. The tales had me laughing out loud.
